What is architecture?

The term architecture can be used to mean a process, a profession or documentation. As a process, architecture is refers to the planning phase of the building a structure. The builders are the coders of the product, once it is architected. This is an extraordinarily important phase of the overall development of the product, and consists of thoroughly understanding and articulating the needs of the users (of the system) and the coders (for the system). This serves as a roadmap for current and future development for the product.

As a profession the focus is on the designing of buildings and environments with consideration for their aesthetic effect. Architects note that "architecture and eloquence are mixed arts whose end is sometimes beauty and sometimes use, but most preferably both"

As documentation, usually based on drawings, architecture defines the structure and/or behaviour of a building or any other kind of system that is to be or has been constructed.

A wider definition often includes the design of the total built environment, from the macro level of how a building integrates with its surrounding man made landscape to the micro level of architectural or construction details and, sometimes, furniture. Wider still, architecture is the activity of designing any kind of system.
